  RECLAIM THE GLOW
from the Spring 1999 issue

Want to reclaim the glow of beautiful skin? Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic acid, improve the skin's appearance by speeding exfoliation (the shedding of dead cells from the top layer of the skin). Although many dermatologists believe that regular use of an AHA product can improve fine wrinkling and mottling that result from sun damage, there are very few real clinical studies (peer-reviewed, double-blind) on AHAs.

However, one such study was conducted by Dr. Lynn Drake, head of the dermatology department at the University of Oklahoma and past president of the American Academy of Dermatology. The 22-week project followed 74 women with sun-damaged skin, comparing creams that were eight-percent AHA (either lactic or glycolic acid) against the same base creams minus the exfoliating chemicals.

The result: About 70 percent of the women who received the AHA creams had smoother, more evenly colored skin, whereas only 41 percent of the placebo group showed similar improvements (probably because the cream acted as a moisturizer). Glycolic and lactic acid appeared to be equally effective.
