BOTOX® Cosmetic, or botulinum toxin, is a safe and effective way to temporarily eliminate wrinkles. In April 2002, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved BOTOX® for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar (frown) lines in adult men and women 65 or younger. The approval specifically applies to the vertical lines between the eyebrows. Besides this area, we find BOTOX® Cosmetic effective on horizontal forehead lines, and crow's feet wrinkles.
Injected under the skin, BOTOX relaxes the muscles of facial expression. When those muscles are relaxed, the wrinkles that are held in place by those muscles disappear. As the treatment gradually wears off over three to six months, the wrinkles return. The procedure is repeated when it wears off.
A possible, although uncommon side effect can be a mild drooping of the eyelid. This can occur if some of the BOTOX reaches the muscles that control the eyelid. If this side effect occurs, it is temporary, and there is treatment to try to resolve the problem more quickly. Occasionally, there can be slight bruising at the injection sites. The treatment only takes a few minutes, and pain is minimal. Several small injections of BOTOX are made at the sites being treated.
There are also some new, exciting uses for BOTOX®Cosmetic, including treatments for down turned corners of the mouth and wrinkles on the lip, chin, neck and chest. BOTOX®Cosmetic is also extremely effective for eliminating excessive sweating on the palms and underarms. For this latter procedure, we apply a numbing cream, ELA-Max® or EMLA, about one hour prior to the treatment. Our patients have been very pleased with the results and elated at gaining control over what in many cases has been a source of embarrassment for them in the past.
