REMOVE UNWANTED FACIAL HAIR: NEW TREATMENTS
from the Winter 2001 issue

One of the perverse, little tricks that Mother Nature plays on us as we age is that men want hair on their heads and can't grow it, and women don't want hair on their faces and can't stop it from growing. Well, men have Propecia® and Rogaine® to help them out. And, now women have VaniqaTM, the first, and only, prescription cream clinically proven to slow the growth of unwanted facial hair in women.

Vaniqa cream is applied to the areas of unwanted hair twice a day. It is not a depilatory but works by retarding the rate of hair growth. The beneficial effects are seen after four to eight weeks of treatment. To maintain the results, Vaniqa must be used on an ongoing basis. Without regular use, the hair growth returns within eight weeks. The only side effects in clinical trials were minor and temporary skin irritations such as redness, stinging, burning, tingling, or rash. Vaniqa is available only by prescription and costs about $42 at Walgreens (the least expensive resource we found) for a 30-gram tube that lasts approximately two months.

If you are looking for permanent hair reduction, we recommend treatment with the EpiLightTM hair removal system. EpiLight uses intense pulsed light flashes to remove unwanted hair. EpiLight has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval as a method of permanent hair reduction. With each treatment, a percentage of the hair follicles are permanently destroyed, and hair will not re-grow in those follicles. With a series of treatments (usually three to five), we can safely achieve significant permanent hair reduction on faces, backs, underarms, abdomens, bikini lines, and legs. EpiLight also is flexible. We can customize treatment parameters specifically for the color, texture, and location of the unwanted hair. With the opening of The Center, we have lowered our EpiLight prices so this effective treatment is now more affordable than ever.

EpiLight does not work as well on white or blonde hair because the hair has very little pigment to absorb the light energy. Now with the arrival of Vaniqa, we have a good solution for the light-colored hairs that don't respond well to EpiLight. EpiLight and Vaniqa can be used in a complementary way to achieve the goal of smooth, hair-free skin.
