FOTOFACIALTM: SKIN REJUVENATION FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
from the Winter 2001 issue

The passage of time leaves its mark on all of our faces. The degree to which our faces show our ages depends primarily on two factors: the skin color we were born with and the number of hours of sun exposure we've had. A fair-skinned redhead generally accumulates more sun damage than a dark-complected individual because the redhead's skin doesn't have as much of the protective pigment melanin.

Sun damage manifests itself in the skin in the form of wrinkles, brown spots, and small red blood vessels (called telangiectasia). But in this new millennium, there is new hope. FotoFacialTM, a revolutionary skin rejuvenation procedure, addresses all of these sun-induced problems. FotoFacial uses a technology called intense pulsed light to eliminate brown spots and shrink telangiectasia. The light energy also stimulates skin cells to produce new collagen thus helping to smooth out fine wrinkles.

FotoFacial treatment is carried out in our office in a series of five sessions, spaced three weeks apart. There is little or no down time after the procedure. Immediately afterwards, the face appears flushed, but that usually resolves in a matter of hours. Brown spots may be accentuated at first before they flake off. A session takes about 30 to 45 minutes. There is some discomfort with the procedure so we recommend using an anesthetic cream on the face prior to the treatment. Patients usually come an hour before their scheduled appointment to have ELA Max anesthetic cream applied to the area to be treated.

Ideal candidates for FotoFacial are people with sun-induced brown spots, red or flushed faces, and fine wrinkles. Chest and neck sun damage also responds well to this treatment. Deeper wrinkles are better treated with other modalities such as laser resurfacing, facelifts, Botox®, or collagen. FotoFacial can also be used in combination with these other procedures.
