COLLAGEN REPLACEMENT THERAPY®
from the Fall 2006 issue
Collagen is a protein that acts as the support structure of the skin. It is the filler substance that gives healthy skin its fullness. The wearing down of the natural collagen framework of the skin causes facial lines and wrinkles. Injectable collagen works to "plump up" the skin reducing wrinkles, furrows, and hollows in the face and give the skin a smoother and more pleasing appearance.
This in-office procedure usually takes about half an hour, with minimal discomfort and little or no downtime after treatment. The results are immediately visible and generally last from three to six months. Just like natural collagen, injectable collagen eventually breaks down, so ongoing treatments are necessary to maintain the results you desire.
Over the last 20 years, millions of procedures have been performed using Collagen Replacement Therapy® in the U.S. to smooth facial lines and wrinkles. Advances in treatment have occurred over the years. Now CosmoDerm® and CosmoPlast®, which are made from natural human collagen, allow you to be treated immediately without the need for a skin test. CosmoDerm® is used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles. CosmoPlast® is designed to treat deeper wrinkles, define the lip border and fill in acne scars.
Both can be used in combination with Botox®Cosmetic and hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, like Restylane®. When used with hyaluronic acid-based fillers, collagen is often used to fill in superficial lines while the hyaluronic acid is placed more deeply to restore skin volume. When collagen is used with Botox®Cosmetic, the effect of both treatments may last longer.
