THE SKINNY

REDUCING WRINKLES WITH A COOL TOUCH
from the Fall 2002 issue

The latest trend in the treatment of skin aging is the use of "minimally invasive cosmetic procedures." As people are getting the message about avoiding tanning and taking better care of their skin, many do not require or prefer to put off as long as possible the surgical facelift or CO2 laser resurfacing. These more invasive treatments carry greater potential risks and more downtime for healing than minimally invasive procedures.

The less invasive options include non-ablative lasers used to improve facial wrinkles and acne scars. After looking at a number of state-of-the-art devices, we liked the CoolTouch® laser the best. The CoolTouch works by delivering laser energy to the dermis of the skin where the collagen-producing cells reside. The energy stimulates the cells to generate new collagen that plumps out wrinkles and elevates acne scars. A series of treatments, usually 4 to 6, is required to achieve the best results. The wrinkles and acne scars are not 100 percent eradicated, but they are softened and improved. The percentage of improvement varies from person to person.

An anesthetic cream, such as ELA-Max® or EMLA, is applied one hour prior to the procedure to decrease discomfort. The treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes. There is some redness in the treated areas that resolves in about an hour or two. Makeup can be applied immediately, if desired.
