We have just introduced a new botulinum toxin named Jeuveau™. It was approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows – what are known as the glabellar lines – for a period of time. Along with a select group of dermatologists and plastic surgeons, I attended the launch meeting where Evolus, the maker of Jeuveau, presented and discussed the science behind this new treatment.
What’s different about this new botulinum toxin and how long will it last? Evolus conducted a head-to-head trial of Jeuveau vs. BOTOX® Cosmetic. A total of 540 adult patients participated in the study. It showed that Jeuveau was safe, effective and equivalent to Botox for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines. In a number of the parameters studied there was a trend in favor of Jeuveau over Botox, but they did not reach statistical significance. This trend suggests that this new toxin might last slightly longer than Botox. However, more studies need to be done to confirm that finding.
Evolus believes the differentiating factors are that Jeuveau was developed for and the company is exclusively dedicated to aesthetics. With that singular focus, Jeuveau is the first but not likely the last product we’ll see from this company.
