If you have unwanted hair, you most likely have flirted with the idea of getting laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is a popular way for people to decrease the number of times they must shave, wax, or tweeze. For many people, it’s a godsend, allowing them to feel more confident and attractive in their own skin. Despite its popularity and effectiveness, many myths surrounding laser hair removal persist, making some hesitant to try it. In this blog, we’ll examine some of the top myths surrounding laser hair removal and look at the realities behind them.

Myth #1 - Laser hair removal is painful

This is one of the most common myths we hear about laser hair removal. People worry that the process will be too painful to bear, especially if they’re treating sensitive parts of their bodies. However, the reality is that pain varies from person to person and depends on the area being treated.

Many lasers come equipped with cooling mechanisms to help soothe the skin as the laser zaps the hair away. If you’re worried about the level of pain, talk to your laser hair removal provider during your consultation about how you can manage it. Here are some tips we suggest to our patients:

  • Take ibuprofen beforehand especially if it's that time of the month (the skin is more sensitive then)
  • Apply numbing cream before your appointment (discuss this with your provider during your consultation)
  • Make sure your laser hair removal provider is using the most up-to-date technology (lots of older technologies aren't so forgiving on the skin)

Myth #2 - Laser hair removal is only for women

Another big myth that needs to be debunked is that laser hair removal is only for women. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Men have unwanted hair too. In fact, many men use laser hair removal to get rid of unwanted hair on their backs, chests, and even their arms and legs.

There’s no reason why men shouldn’t enjoy the benefits of laser hair removal too. Male patients are always welcome in our office.

Myth #3 - Laser hair removal is not safe for darker skin

Some people believe that laser hair removal isn’t safe for people with darker skin tones, making it a treatment exclusively for those with lighter skin. However, this myth is untrue. Thankfully, the technology behind laser hair removal has improved so drastically over the years that lasers can now safely treat all skin types.

If you’re concerned about how the laser will interact with your skin, make sure you find a laser hair removal provider who has experience treating a range of skin tones and discuss this during your consultation. In our office, we use the LightSheer QUATTRO by Lumenis, which can treat all hair types and skin tones.

Myth #4 - Laser hair removal permanently removes hair

Laser hair removal is often referred to as a permanent solution to hair growth. However, this isn’t exactly true. Laser hair removal targets hair follicles during their active growth phase, preventing the follicles from producing future hair. This process can lead to a significant decrease in hair growth over time. However, this is different from removing hair permanently. Hair can grow back after several months or even years, but it will typically be thinner and less frequent than before.

Therefore, we do recommend touch-ups after a series depending on the patients' personal results.

Myth #5 - Laser hair removal is too expensive for most people

Some people believe that laser hair removal is beyond their budget. While it’s true that laser hair removal can be a costly endeavor, there are ways to make it more affordable like financing or unique offers for purchasing multiple areas. Also, keep in mind that over time, the cost of regular waxing or shaving adds up, making laser hair removal a more cost-effective option overall. Plus, self-confidence is priceless!
