Happy New Year Everybody! I recently posted on my social media asking what everyone really wanted to hear or talk about and I got a phenomenal response! Over the next few weeks and months I will be addressing these questions. If you have a follow up question or would like to know something different, post it in the comments and I will get to them as soon as I can! First up, where to start with uneven skin tone…
Q. I’ve heard so many different treatments: SkinPen, Fraxel, IPL, Hydrafacials. I have uneven skin tone with redness I want to even out, but don’t know where to start. What are those treatments for and what is the best to start with where you will see great results?
A. That is a great question! There are so many available treatment options and it can be confusing to decide which one is the best for you. That’s where a cosmetic consultation comes in. When I am consulting with a patient, I first ask them what issues bother them and we go from there. If it’s uneven skin tone and redness, I recommend treatment options that would best address them. For instance in your case, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) would be a good option because it addresses redness from chronic sun damage and rosacea, as well as brown spots, freckles, and melasma.
The other treatment options you mentioned are also effective but more so for other issues. The SkinPen/MicroPen/microneedling builds collagen and lightens brown spots but does not directly address redness. Fraxel is a resurfacing laser that treats brown spots, wrinkles and pores, but again does not treat redness to a great degree. Hydrafacial is a low-downtime facial that exfoliates, brightens, and moisturizes the skin. This is a nice maintenance treatment after your goals have been met.
Regardless of the treatment option recommended, I always ensure every patient is on a good skin care regimen. You have the opportunity to apply effective products to your skin twice a day, which over time will produce noticeable results. This will not only improve your skin, it will protect your ‘investment’ for procedures done in the office, such as IPL. And most importantly, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30+ will help protect your skin from further damage.
