Breast Reduction

Oversized breasts can create social and functional issues for women. Furthermore, overly large and unbalanced breasts can lead to self-image issues as well as neck and back pain. Dr. Ryan Couvillion is a plastic surgeon in Houston, TX who can help women rebuild their confidence and enjoy an active lifestyle through breast reduction surgery, otherwise known as a reduction mammoplasty. This cosmetic surgery at SBA Dermatology & Plastic Surgery removes excess fat, tissue, and skin to reshape the breasts to a size that better fits your frame. This surgery also reduces the size of the areolas and moves the nipple/areola complex so they look natural with the new size.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST REDUCTION?

If you have large, heavy breasts that get in the way of everyday life, breast reduction surgery may be what you need to attain the silhouette and relief you desire. Breast reduction is an effective procedure for women who cannot live an active lifestyle due to limitations from the size of their breasts. If you also suffer from consistent skin rashes or irritation (as well as body pains), breast reduction surgery can reduce these medical conditions. It is crucial that patients are at a healthy, stable weight and choose a surgeon, like Dr. Couvillion, who listens to their aesthetic goals and has the knowledge to create a natural appearance. In most situations, the best candidates for this procedure are fully matured individuals who have realistic expectations about the results they can achieve.

DOES BREAST REDUCTION CAUSE SCARRING?

Surgical breast reduction is an outpatient treatment and is conducted with the patient under general anesthesia. The duration of the surgery depends on various factors, including what incision method is used, the general technique, and finally, the degree of reduction. The degree of areola and nipple area repositioning will also be a factor. In some cases, liposuction may be used for fat removal of the areas under the arms. During the consultation, all of these aspects are addressed with Dr. Couvillion. The planned scar locations are thoroughly discussed. Careful surgical technique and placement in natural lines lead to a decrease in the visibility of scarring. Based on the complexity of the size and overall reduction, either an inverted-T or a straight line (vertical) incision will be used. Breast fat and tissue will then be removed, and the remaining skin and tissue will be tightened and lifted.  We would love to review before-and-after photos with you at your consultation, so you know exactly what scars to expect.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY

Once surgery has been completed and patients have recovered from anesthesia, they are then released home to begin the healing process. A compression bra will be worn for about 6 weeks that will provide support to the breasts. Many of our patients at SBA Dermatology & Plastic Surgery say they feel less weighed down and more self-assured. Following surgical breast reduction, you can enjoy the clothes you have always wanted and have more confidence in your new figure. Keep in mind that it is important to maintain a healthy body weight so the outcomes are not negatively impacted.

BREAST REDUCTION FAQS

How much does breast reduction surgery cost?

Your cost for breast reduction surgery can be reviewed with Dr. Couvillion in your consultation. When he has created your personal treatment plan, it is easier to calculate your costs, including facility fees, anesthesia, and more. Reduction surgery usually leads to a dramatic improvement in all aspects of life, which is why our staff will help you find low-interest medical financing to help make your treatment easy to afford. We will also help you talk to your health insurance provider to see if your policy covers some of your expenses.

Will my insurance cover breast reduction?

Your health insurance might pay the cost of your surgery if it's considered medically necessary. If you want to use your insurance, talk to Dr. Couvillion so he can help you navigate the insurance process. You should also contact your provider to find out if your specific policy includes breast reduction surgery, as some insurers do not cover this procedure.  Insurance companies require a large amount of information, such as your weight, height, body surface area, and body mass index (BMI), as well as photos.  They use this information to determine if they will cover the procedure.

Will my nipples be moved?

Absolutely.  The nipples and areola will be moved up to a central position during breast reduction surgery, just like in a breast lift. Dr. Couvillion will select an incision technique that is appropriate for your specific situation. Your options will be explained in your consultation before Dr. Couvillion helps you choose the best treatment plan to meet your goals.

Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?

Reduction surgery can affect breastfeeding. Although some women can still breastfeed after a surgical reduction, other women cannot. It's difficult to know whether your breast reduction will interfere with breastfeeding as it is impossible to predict who can and can't breastfeed even without having breast surgery.

Can my breasts regrow after surgery?

Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts may get smaller or bigger with weight changes or with breastfeeding/pregnancy. Therefore, it is better to be at a healthy weight prior to your surgery that you can easily maintain. In your consultation, Dr. Couvillion will discuss the best ways to prepare for your reduction and what you can do after to help make sure your results last.
