Board Certification Matters
Each dermatologist at our Houston practice is certified by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD). Founded in 1932, the board has always standardized and improved dermatological techniques around the country. Over time, the board has expanded to its present size of 17 directors who oversee its functions. The ABD is an independent, objective organization, and it is not affiliated with pharmaceutical companies, government, or educational institutions. The ABD is under the oversight of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), which regulates 24 member boards in fields including plastic surgery, pediatrics, and emergency medicine.
When a physician is certified by an ABMS member board, it indicates that he or she has demonstrated a significant breadth of knowledge about his or her field. To earn certification, physicians must undergo rigorous oral and written exams that test their competence in a variety of clinical scenarios. Only after earning a satisfactory score can a physician earn certification.
Board certification is a completely voluntary process, and doctors don’t need to be certified to practice medicine. Doctors who choose to pursue board certification do so because they wish to challenge themselves professionally and offer their patients the best service possible.
