Lesion Removal

WHAT IS LESION REMOVAL?

There are many different types of lesions, including moles, warts, skin tags, lipomas, skin cancers and many more. Sometimes, skin lesions are raised to create a bump or can lie under the surface of the skin, causing a dark spot. While most skin lesions are no cause for concern, some individuals decide to have them treated for aesthetic purposes or to alleviate the fear of health concerns, like skin irritation or cancer. At SBA Dermatology & Plastic Surgery in Houston, TX, plastic surgeon Dr. Ryan Couvillion is proud to provide lesion removal to his patients.  During a consultation, Dr. Couvillion will examine your skin condition to determine which removal technique is the best option for you.

WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR LESION REMOVAL?

The removal of lesions is commonly performed for both aesthetic and practical reasons. Great candidates for this procedure typically:

  • Wish to rid themselves of a skin lesion
  • Feel self-conscious about their appearance
  • Have a lesion that may be cancerous or benign
  • Have a skin lesion in an area that is not easy to conceal, such as the nose, chin, cheeks, or hands

HOW DOES LESION REMOVAL WORK?

Removing lesions is performed under local anesthesia in a minor procedure room. The technique chosen will be based on the size, location, and depth of the lesion. Certain lesions may be removed easily with a shaving procedure while others may require excision for removal. The process that is ideal for your skin will be determined during your consultation. Despite the approach chosen, Dr. Couvillion will do his best to minimize scarring as much as possible.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER LESION REMOVAL?

Following your procedure, most patients have minimal pain and may require an over the counter medication for soreness. These symptoms are normal and typically begin to subside within a week. Anti-inflammatory medications can be used to ease the pain. If sutures were placed, you should be careful not to disturb the stitches and observe all aftercare instructions given to you by Dr. Couvillion. We see most patients who had an incision about 1 week after the procedure for a wound check.
