Neck Liposuction

A well-contoured neck is closely tied to a youthful appearance.  Excess fat stored in the neck can be present due to a number of factors, a large one being genetics. During liposuction of the neck, plastic surgeon Dr. Ryan Couvillion will suction away excess fat of the neck, with the focus in the area below the jaw. This helps to eliminate a "double chin" and create a more youthful profile. This procedure is an effective solution for both men and women who desire a tauter neckline and a more defined jawline. For more information on this treatment and the benefits for your neckline, make an appointment with SBA Dermatology & Plastic Surgery in Houston, TX.

Those who are likely to benefit from neck liposuction at SBA Dermatology & Plastic Surgery in Houston, TX are men and women looking to remove unwanted fat from their necks to reveal a thinner appearance. You can have minimal or substantial amounts of fat removed. Individuals who maintain a healthy routine with a good diet and exercise are most likely to maintain lasting results. If you suffer from sagging or excess skin on the neck, you may be an ideal candidate for skin tightening surgery (a neck lift) as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with neck liposuction.

During the liposuction procedure, Dr. Couvillion will use a suctioning device called a cannula to suction away the undesired fat through a small incision beneath the jawline.  Occasionally, additional tiny incisions are made behind the ears. He uses the tumescent technique where an anesthetic medication is mixed with IV fluids and injected into the area - this allows both decreased pain and reduces bleeding. The incision is then closed with small sutures. Though neck liposuction can be done on its own, many individuals choose to have it completed along with another surgery, such as a neck lift or facelift.

Your procedure will either be performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure or in the office under local anesthesia. Patients may need to wear compression garments following their surgery to help minimize swelling. The time needed for a full recovery will vary from patient to patient and could be lengthened if your treatment plan included additional, complementary procedures. Maximal results will be revealed in the few months following the surgery. Since the incision site for neck liposuction is small, scarring is typically minimal and easy to conceal.

How much does neck liposuction cost?

Your cost for neck liposuction will vary based on many factors, such as your goals, your treatment plan, and the amount of liposuction needed to achieve your aesthetic goals. Following a complete examination, Dr. Couvillion will develop an individualized surgical plan for your specific goals. In your initial consultation, he will also review payment options and how to get low-interest medical financing for your neck liposuction.

Will I have visible scarring after neck liposuction?

Dr. Couvillion makes surgical incisions where they are less visible or easily concealed. In your initial consultation, he can tell you where he can make the small incisions required for the liposuction cannula. These incisions will be placed just below your jawline or in the natural folds of your skin where they are difficult for others to see. Dr. Couvillion will discuss scar care instructions so your stitches heal properly.

Does the fat come back after a neck liposuction procedure?

Fat cells that are removed through liposuction do not grow back. However, should you gain a significant amount of weight after liposuction, your neck may become larger because the remaining fat cells will grow. That's why Dr. Couvillion suggests you be at or near a healthy, stable weight prior to surgery. This makes it easier to sustain your surgical results with exercise and a balanced diet.

What is the difference between neck liposuction and Kybella injections?

A new minimally invasive treatment, Kybella, can reduce small amounts of fat only in the submental area. If you want significant amounts of fat eliminated from several areas of your neck, surgical neck liposuction is a better choice. In your consultation, Dr. Couvillion will listen to your concerns and explain your treatment choices, including liposuction and Kybella.

Should I get a neck lift or neck liposuction?

Dr. Couvillion can help you decide if you need neck liposuction, a lift, or both in your initial consultation. On the whole, a neck lift removes more loose skin compared to neck liposuction, which eliminates stubborn pockets of fat. Often, a combination of liposuction and a lift may give you the best outcomes for a smooth profile. Tell Dr. Couvillion about all of your concerns and goals in your initial consultation so he can develop a comprehensive surgical plan.
