Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy
The secret of glowing, beautiful skin is hiding in an unexpected place — in your own blood. We now have the ability to extract growth factors produced by your body that are found in your bloodstream. Called platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP, it helps our Houston, Texas-area patients enhance and rejuvenate their skin by spurring it to produce new collagen.
How It Works
Our blood is made up of various elements to keep our bodies healthy and functioning. Among the most important, platelets help slow bleeding when we’re injured. In addition, they also contain a number of growth factors to keep tissues throughout the body healthy. PRP therapy isolates your platelets and uses the growth factors to encourage collagen development for cosmetic purposes. The platelet-rich plasma serum behaves the same way the body would respond if there were an actual injury – healing platelets rush in to create a rich fibrin mesh. This fibrin mesh in turn calls out to natural healing cells, releasing growth factors and stimulating the process of fibroblast production – the cells that create collagen. The goal of PRP skin rejuvenation therapy is to improve skin tone and texture, tighten skin, soften lines and pores, and shrink acne scars. We also see improvement in brown spots and melasma. Results begin to show 3-4 weeks after the treatment session and continue to improve with time. Three to four treatment sessions are generally recommended, spaced 1-2 months apart, to achieve the best outcome.
PRP is a popular treatment for overall skin rejuvenation and anti-aging but also as a localized injection into deeper wrinkles and folds. It can be used in conjunction with dermal fillers to lift folds and wrinkles and revolumize the face.
In addition to rejuvenating skin, PRP therapy can also be used to effectively treat hair loss both in women and in men.
Your PRP therapy experience begins with a simple blood draw, similar to what happens when your family doctor asks for blood work for laboratory testing. For PRP therapy, the blood goes into a medical centrifuge to isolate and purify the platelets. Because PRP is immunologically neutral, it poses no danger of allergy, hypersensitivity or foreign-body reactions. Application of the therapy depends on the type of treatment. PRP can be injected in localized areas or distributed over the top of the skin after microneedling or after any fractionated laser treatments such as Clear+Brilliant™, Fraxel®, Ultrapulse® and Resufx®. PRP therapy is not painful or significantly invasive, and you should expect to return to your normal activities after your appointment is over.
